September's Birthstone: Sapphire Sapphire has long been considered a gem of royalty. It has been worn in the jewelry of kings and queens for good luck. Supposedly, sapphire protects its wearer against poisons and evil spirits as well, and guides the person toward virtue and wisdom. Sapphire is a very durable variety of the mineral corundum (the same mineral as ruby.) It has a hardness of 9 on Moh’s scale (second only to diamond), so it is very resistant to chips and scratches – excellent for everyday wear. The gem can be found in a variety of blue shades, in addition to other colors like yellow, pink, orange, and purple. The source of the finest sapphires is reputed to be the Kashmir Valley in India, but gems from this source are extremely rare. Other top sources are Australia, Burma, and Sri Lanka. |
