November's Birthstone: Citrine

The name “citrine” is derived from the French word citron, meaning lemon. The gem’s color can range from light straw-yellow to deep orangey-red. Historically, people carried citrine as a protective talisman against the plague, bad skin, and evil thoughts. Legends tell that citrine was used as a charm against bites from snakes and other venomous reptiles.

Citrine is often confused with Topaz, and many people know the gem by the name “golden topaz”. However, the gem actually has little in common with the more expensive topaz than similarities in color. Citrine is a variety of quartz, which is the same mineral family as amethyst. Some gems can be found that display both the yellow of citrine and the purple of amethyst – a combination known as ametrine.

Found primarily in Brazil, Africa, and the U.S., citrine is tough and durable, and a good choice for everyday wear.
