July's Birthstone: Ruby

Fine rubies are truly among the rarest gems in the world. While it can be found in many shades of brownish to purplish red, true red rubies are actually more rare than fine diamonds – especially in sizes over 2 carats.
Ruby – the same mineral as sapphire – is very dense, and thus small for its weight. A 1-carat ruby will be much smaller than a 1-carat diamond. They are fairly resistant to scratching and chipping, making them good choices for everyday wear.
The Delong Star Ruby, which resides in the Natural History Museum in new York City, weighs 100.32 carats. In 1964, it was the object of an infamous burglary, carried out by a man named Jack Murphy. It was ransomed for $25,000 and recovered at a designated drop-off site – a phone booth in Florida.
Another famous gem is the Mogok Ruby, a 15.97-carat untreated Burmese gem which was sold by Sotheby’s of New York in 1988 for $3,630,000 – a whopping $227,301 per carat! It was purchased by Graff of London, who reportedly sold it to the Sultan of Brunei as an engagement ring for one of his wives.
