February's Birthstone: Amethytst

Amethyst is the oldest of gemstones to be used by mankind. In Europe, personal adornments have been discovered in ruins dating back 25,000 years!
The gem gets its name from a myth about the Greek god Bacchus. In a drunken rage, he turned a pack of wild beasts on the first person he saw – a lovely maiden named Amethyst. To protect Amethyst, the goddess Diana turned her into stone. Then in repentance, Bacchus poured the last on his wine onto her, turning the stone a deep purple. Thereafter, legend has it that amethyst has a sobering effect on its wearer, and protects against intoxication.
Amethyst is purple quartz, and is the most valuable if all the quartz varieties. It occurs in a wide range of tones, from deep purple to light lavender. Once extremely costly, new mines discovered in Russia and increased production in Brazil have caused prices to drop. Amethyst is currently a very affordable gemstone, even in high qualities
