August's Birthstone: Peridot Peridot was originally found on a small island in the Red Sea, and was used in Egyptian jewelry from the early 2nd millennium BC! Ancient Romans also used peridot, which they nicknamed "emerald of the evening". In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Peridot has long been considered to aid friendship and free the mind of envious thoughts. Legend says that if the gem is set in gold, it will have the power of dispel fears and bad dreams. Peridot is one of the few gems that come in only one color. The rich green color comes from traces of iron, and can vary in shade from yellowish green to olive and brownish green. The gem is found in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan, China, Africa, and Australia. There is also a peridot mine in Arizone, where it is very popular in Native American jewelry. |
